“Modeling Potential Medicare Spending Impacts from Earlier Hospice Election”

The Institute commissioned ATI Advisory to explore the potential benefits of earlier election to hospice for eligible patients in the final eight weeks of life. Through their analysis, ATI found if those Medicare beneficiaries were to enter hospice five days earlier, Medicare could save between $1.19 billion to $1.5 billion per year.

This analysis support the idea that a modest change in electing hospice sooner could create overall savings for Medicare at the same time, critically, improving the patient care experience and family satisfaction.

New Research RFP

The Institute seeks a contract research organization to conduct impact analyses of possible changes to the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services Hospice payment system. The following Request for Proposals (RFP) describes the project and contract bounds including the target subject areas, and maximum budget and duration. For profit and non-profit research organizations and institutions may apply.

Proposals are due June 29, 2026
